Tech Tip 10 - Finder Tips

The Apple Finder is familiar to any Apple user, but many people don’t know that there are lots of simple time saving tricks to make life easier.

  1. 1. Use Command/Tab combination to quickly switch between applications. While holding down the Command  key with your left thumb, click quickly down on, and release the tab key. This will show you all of the currently running applications as large icons across your screen, in order from left to right of their most recent use. Each time you click the tab key, the next application will be chosen. Simply release the Command  key when the desired application is highlighted. You can also use the left/right arrows, once the applications are displayed, to select an application. Using the up arrow will enable Exposé for the open windows of the highlighted application, so that if you have multiple Safari or Mail windows active, they will all appear within a Exposé environment.

  2. 2. You can also use the above tip to quickly quit open applications. Once the application you wish to quite is highlighted, just hit the “q” key. Since the Command  key is already being held down, the application will quit, and it’s icon will disappear from the list.

  3. 3. Similar to the Comand/Tab combination, you can use the Command  ~ (tilde) combination within most applications to cycle through that application’s open windows.

  4. 4. Different uses of the Command/Tab with Exposé active and the ~ (tilde) key will allow you to cycle through your applications within Exposé.

While perhaps a little confusing at first, once you get the hang of it, this will make any user of multiple applications much more productive.
