Tech Tip 05

Imroving Email Performance for Mail.app

This Tech-Tip may take some Mac users a little out of their comfort zone, but is worth it for the improved performance of Apple Mail. Mail.app uses a simple database called sqlite. This database grows over time, and can cause Mail.app to become sluggish. Fortunately, as with many databases, there is a way to optimize it, but it involves using the Terminal application and typing some commands. So...

1. Quit Mail.

2. Open Terminal (found in your Utilities folder)

3. Type the following two commands:

    cd ~/Library/Mail

    sqlite3 Envelope\ Index

A “sqlite>” prompt will appear.

4. At that prompt, type “vacuum subjects;” leaving off the “quotes”.

  1. 5.After a short delay, the prompt will return. Type Control-D to exit.

  2. 6.Restart Mail and enjoy the extra speed.
